I-59/20 CBD Bridge Replacement

Birmingham, Alabama

Project Description

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) awarded the contract for the third and final phase of the bridge replacement project for Interstate 59/20 (I-59/20) in Birmingham to Johnson Bros. Corp. The company bid $474.7 million.

The elevated portions of I-59/20 through downtown Birmingham's Central Business District (CBD) are over 40 years old and in disrepair. Current usage of I-59/20 is approximately 160,000 vehicles per day which is twice the design capacity, requiring the replacement and upgrade of the viaduct.

The bridges are designed to be erected using the span-by-span construction method utilizing falsework towers. The construction schedule includes a one-year shut down of I-59/20 through Birmingham, starting in the Fall of 2018 during which time the precast segments will be erected.
